The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening fiscal governance, transparency and accountability through greater support for the Fiscal Responsibility Commission.
Senator Akume gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Barrister Charles Chukwuemeka Abana, and members of the Commission’s management team in Abuja.
The SGF commended the Commission’s role in promoting prudent management of public resources and advancing the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He also praised its collaboration with anti-corruption and oversight agencies in strengthening accountability and institutional integrity.
Senator Akume assured the Commission of government support in addressing its operational needs, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms would further improve fiscal governance across public institutions.
Earlier, Barrister Abana briefed the SGF on reforms introduced since assuming office. He said the Commission has intensified revenue monitoring and enforcement of compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility Act among government-owned enterprises and revenue-generating ministries, departments and agencies.
According to him, the Commission facilitated remittances of about one-point-eight-four trillion naira into government coffers as of September 2025, while more than seven hundred and sixty billion naira has already been remitted between January and May this year. He added that the Commission is targeting two-point-five trillion naira in independent revenue for 2026.
Barrister Abana also announced the completion of a revised Operating Surplus Computation Template, which is being automated to improve fiscal oversight, with its official presentation scheduled for July 28 in Abuja.
He said the Commission has unveiled a new three-year strategic plan focused on institutional reforms, stakeholder engagement, capacity building and the adoption of global best practices in fiscal governance.
The Acting Chairman further disclosed that the Commission is expanding collaboration with agencies including the EFCC, ICPC, Code of Conduct Bureau, Bureau of Public Procurement and the Office of the Auditor-General to strengthen enforcement of fiscal responsibility laws.
He also reiterated the Commission’s commitment to amending the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 to reflect current fiscal realities and improve compliance and enforcement.
Barrister Abana appealed for the SGF’s continued support in securing a permanent office, replacing retired staff and providing operational vehicles and digital forensic tools to enhance the Commission’s effectiveness
